As Santiago returned to work, her fellow senators handed her a commendation for being elected as a judge in the International Criminal Court (ICC) in December last year.
Senators earlier adopted Senate Resolution 667 filed by Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada, wherein she was hailed as the first Filipino, Asian and female judge from a developing state in Asia to join the ICC as a judge. Santiago’s feat gave honor to the Philippines, according to the resolution.
The Philippine government, through the Department of Foreign Affairs, campaigned for Santiago’s bid in the ICC, the nomination of which came from President Aquino himself.
Santiago was a regional trial court judge, head of the immigration bureau before she became a senator. She has a doctorate degree in law and once served in the United Nations as an expert in international law.
